Position Title: Hammer Helper

Reports To: Production Supervisor

Supervises: None

Classification: Hourly, Union, Non-exempt

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist Hammersmith in centering punches
  • Assist in maintenance of the industrial power hammer or press during breakdowns
  • Sweep scale while processing jobs to keep die clean
  • Position punches on parts with tongs
  • Hold sizing blocks and mandrels during part processing
  • Measure and assemble sizing blocks
  • Manually roll parts as required during processing
  • Move material using powered industrial trucks
  • Open and close furnace doors
  • Operate quench tank
  • Operate powered industrial trucks
  • Change shoes and pins on manipulator as needed
  • Drive the manipulator as directed by the Hammersmith
  • Periodic cleaning of press pit
  • Complete equipment logs prior to use each shift
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent and at least two years of related experience and/or equivalent education & experience
  • Previous knowledge of metal work processes acquired through formal academic training and/or experience earned through past employment
  • Ability to measure parts using standard measuring devices
  • Demonstrated reasoning and critical thinking skills
  • Displays a team attitude and have respect for others
  • Demonstrated computer skills for data entry

Working Conditions:

This position is full-time. Days and hours of work are determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Occasional flexibility to work an alternate schedule may be necessary for business demands. The position mainly operates in a manufacturing setting with frequent exposure to production equipment and machinery. The setting may be busy and noisy and with exposure to dust, fumes and gases. Personal protective equipment is provided by the Company.

Physical Demands:

While performing the job duties of this job, the employee will spend most of his/her time standing and walking and will be required to regularly see, talk and hear. The employee is required to do the following:

  • Standing/Walking for 3 hours (continuously)
  • Lift 1-50 lbs (frequently)
  • Lift 51-90 lbs (rarely)
  • Carry 1-20 lbs (occasionally)
  • Carry 21-50 lbs (rarely)
  • Bend (frequently)
  • Squat (occasionally)
  • Reach above shoulder level (rarely)
